Conferência David Zarefsky, 2ª f, 8 de maio, 12h, Auditório 1, FCSH/NOVA

The surprising results of the U.S. 2016 Presidential election called into question many assumptions about the nature of democracy and the state of political argumentation. Professor Zarefsky will examine several factors accounting for the election results, put the 2016 campaign in the context of other U.S. election campaigns, and assess how the campaign changed the “rules of the game.” He will consider structural elements of U.S. campaigns, the media coverage of the campaigns, and the increasing polarization of the citizenry as factors affecting contemporary political argumentation.
