David Zarefsky é uma figura de renome mundial no campo da retórica e argumentação política. É ex-presidente da National Communication Association (USA), the Rhetoric Society of America e também ex-diretor (1988-2000) da School of Communication na Northwestern University, Chicago, EUA. É reconhecido pela sua investigação do discurso público norte-americano, especialmente a retórica presidencial (livro Political Argumentation in the United States, Filadélfia, 2014); pelos seus estudos influentes sobre teoria da argumentação e retórica (livro Rhetorical Perspectives on Argumentation, Nova Iorque, 2014); e pelos best-sellers sobre discurso público, debate e comunicação estratégica (livro Public Speaking: Strategies for Success, 8ª Edição, 2016).
Resumo da Conferência: U.S. POLITICS, DEMOCRACY, AND ARGUMENTATION AFTER THE 2016 ELECTION The surprising results of the U.S. 2016 Presidential election called into question many assumptions about the nature of democracy and the state of political argumentation. Professor Zarefsky will examine several factors accounting for the election results, put the 2016 campaign in the context of other U.S. election campaigns, and assess how the campaign changed the “rules of the game.” He will consider structural elements of U.S. campaigns, the media coverage of the campaigns, and the increasing polarization of the citizenry as factors affecting contemporary political argumentation.
